How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through your device's app store, not within KodamaTalk directly. To cancel:
- iOS: Open Settings > tap your name > Subscriptions > KodamaTalk > Cancel Subscription.
- Android: Open Google Play Store > tap your Profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > KodamaTalk > Cancel subscription.
You will continue to have access until the end of your current billing period.
How do I delete my account?
You can delete your account from within the app. Go to Settings > Account > Delete Account and confirm the deletion.
Your account will be soft-deleted immediately and permanently removed after a 30-day grace period. During this time, you can contact us to restore your account. Please note that you must cancel your subscription separately through the App Store or Google Play.
What data do you collect?
We collect account information (email, display name), learning data (conversation transcripts, XP, streaks), and device tokens for push notifications. Voice recordings are processed in real-time and are not permanently stored — only the resulting text transcription is retained.

My voice isn't being recognized. What can I do?
Here are some tips for better voice recognition:
- Find a quiet environment — background noise can interfere with speech recognition.
- Speak clearly and at a natural pace — avoid speaking too quickly or too softly.
- Hold the phone closer — keep the microphone about 15–20 cm from your mouth.
- Check microphone permissions — make sure KodamaTalk has access to your microphone in your device settings.
- Restart the session — if recognition stops working, try ending and starting a new conversation.
How does spirit evolution work?
Your spirit companion evolves based on XP (experience points) that you earn through voice practice sessions. Every spirit starts at the Baby stage and evolves to the Child stage once it reaches 800 XP.
XP is earned through conversation turns — 20 XP per turn, with a minimum of 50 XP and a maximum of 300 XP per session. Maintaining a practice streak also earns bonus XP: 50 XP at 3 days and 200 XP at 7 days. The more you practice, the faster your spirit grows!
Can I change my spirit companion?
Currently, each account is paired with one spirit companion that you choose during onboarding. You can select from three species — Kogitsune, Kohouou, or Kokirin — each with a unique personality. Changing your spirit companion after selection is not available at this time, but we are considering this feature for a future update.
Is there a free trial?
KodamaTalk does not currently offer a free trial. A subscription ($9.99/month or $79.99/year) is required from the start. We believe in the value of consistent daily practice, and our subscription helps ensure you have full access to all features from day one.
What languages are supported?
KodamaTalk is designed for English speakers learning Japanese. The app interface is in English, and your spirit companion speaks Japanese (with occasional broken English!) to create a natural immersion experience. Support for additional language pairs may be added in the future.
